Procedure followed by me to get modem working:-
- Downloaded modem drivers HSF_V1.01.02_K2.2.14-5.0.tar from http://www.olitec.com .
- I had SuSE 6.3 installed ( Kernel 2.2.13-5). Downloaded kernel-2.2.14-5.0.i686.rpm which is binary package for kernel version 2.2.14-5.0 for which the modem drivers are compiled. Installed and booted the new kernel.
- Extracted modem drivers.Edited lin_hsf.inf to add in [Generic] section %HSFModem% = ModemX, PCI\VEN_127A&DEV_2015&SUBSYS_2015127A which is device ID of my modem. See below to know how I got device ID.
- Ran ./hsf_linstall.pl to process the .inf file.Ran ./ins_all to insert all the modules.
- Configured wvdial for dialing. I changed second init string to ATX1 as default string caused my system to hang.
How I got Device ID :-
I ran hwinfo /ui in my Windows 98. This utility lists all devices with their details. Then I searched for registry key of device Rockwell PCI Modem Enumerator. I dropped the unnessesary details so it looks like PCI\VEN_****&DEV_****&SUBSYS_*******A as in lin_hsf.inf provided in HSF_V1.01.02_K2.2.14-5.0.tar.
Some other things tried by me:-
- I also was successful to use the modem under Mandrake 7.1 downgrading the kernel and using kppp. I am currently using this configuararion.
- I compiled kernel 2.2.14 and tried using that. It works by forcibly loading the modules.
